Peanuts comic strip will always be irreplaceable
Re the Oct. 7 letter, “Move over, Charlie Brown, for newer comic strips”: Seeing those classic “Peanuts” reruns made me wish that Charles M. Schulz was still alive so he could have his characters deal with today’s topical issues, like the Internet, global warming, childhood obesity, pet obesity, etc.
But having someone replace Schulz by drawing a contemporary version of “Peanuts” would sound sacrilegious. For example, in the past, there were two unsuccessful incarnations of Walt Kelly’s popular strip “Pogo.” But I’d hate to see the original strips go away, too.
I suppose a few more years of “Peanuts” reruns wouldn’t hurt.

Peanuts still a delight
There were 17,897 comic strips over 50 years. Each one laughable, each one lovable, and from someone who inserted his own social commentary into a comic series, that was way ahead of its time. And a recent letter writer thinks Peanuts should not maintain its spot in the comic section?
Seriously, I could read worse, but my husband and I are particularly fond of anything Peanuts. We wed in May, and I incorporated a reference to Peanuts in my vows. Perhaps that may seem fanatical to some, but probably not when I mention that my husband and I want to name future children Charlie and Lucy.
Peanuts is an American icon adored by more than a few. Although we have nothing against encouraging new talent, now is not the time to eliminate something so American in a country losing focus on being America.

Keep Charlie Brown alive
I was not happy (an understatement) with a recent letter. Peanuts is one of the best cartoons in the paper. I am pleased that my grandchildren can enjoy it as much as I did and do. Please do not remove it from the paper. So many good cartoons have already been taken from different papers. Please leave Charlie Brown alone. Lucy does enough to him. Thank you.
